SHIELA & MAGGIE
SHEILA GIBB & MAGGIE JOHNSTON
MAY 2008
We were delighted with the area and the variety of the painting locations from the Pyrenees to the seascapes at Collioure, vineyards, historic buildings, villages, market places and civic parks. We were taken each day to yet another wonderful place to draw and paint the favourite being Collioure -- St Ives in France!. Terry's knowledge of inspirational locations was vast.
Staying with Terry and his wife Sally was a wonderful experience as they were hosts who had a knack of immediately making you feel at home and relaxed and were great company.
The atmosphere in the comfortable farmhouse was steeped in art, artists, their work and the locations all around us where they had stayed. There was the opportunity to access reference books along with Terry and Sally's detailed knowledge of the famous painters who had visited the area such as Matisse, Derain and Soutine.
The meals were delicious and beautifully served. Breakfast in the garden with freshly baked goodies from the local boulangerie was something to look forward to each morning.
Their extensive garden also gave an opportunity to draw and paint and it was lovely to have a swim in the pool at the end of each very full day.
The relaxed and flexible atmosphere created by Terry encouraged us to feel comfortable in exploring various different styles and techniques. Terrys expertise in the use of pastels which were new to us encouraged us to use them throughout the 2 weeks. Learning a new skill was exciting and fulfilling and we have continued to use them. We were also able to develop our work on a few occasions back at the farmhouse with Terry's ability to enlarge and project photographs taken on site which complemented the sketches we had previously made. Again the advantages of a flexible programme adapted to individual client's needs was a plus point.
